Trauma

Trauma is an emotional response to a terrible event like an accident, rape or natural disaster. For some, this can cause longer term reactions like unpredictable emotions, intrusive thoughts and memories that won’t seem to stop popping up, withdrawal from different aspects of life motivated by a wish to avoid reminders of the event, strained relationships, sleep problems, constant anxiety, and even physical symptoms like headaches or nausea. This reaction often becomes chronic without therapy and direct intervention.

The American Psychiatric Association Practice Guideline (2017) has stated that evidence based treatments are recommended as “first-line treatments of trauma.” In particular, Dr. Fugitt is certified in Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and has expertise in Prolonged Exposure (PE), two of the highest recommended treatments for trauma recovery.
